2024/06/28 Another short walk to Plas yn Rhiw

Friday 28th June

We walked along the road past the church, which is now a holiday let, and then down to Plas yn Rhiw tea room for coffee and a slice of bara brith.

Back up via Treheli, Ty’n yr Parc and Ffynon Sant. The very steep path which we didn’t find the first time -in 2020.

Saw a thrush with a snail, heard a black cap and lots of chiff-chaffs.

Still windy, but actually very warm in the sun.

Back after 2.5 miles. and around 300 feet of climbing.Steep hillsides here.

Wednesday 26th June

The clearest morning yet, so much so that we could see Yr Wyddfa’s outline to the right of Garn Fadryn.

A late breakfast and a shortish, but not flat walk past Ffynon Sant

and along paths to the road between Mynydd Rhiw and Rhiw. We visited the rocks near the road, then took the footpath through the nature reserve heathland. 2.5 miles.

Very warm, very enjoyable, and clearer than when we walked it in 2021 (see below).

Back for a late coffee and some lunch and just hanging out for a while.

We walked down to Treheli camp site cafe. Very steep path and not easy to find at first. Then we sat around for ages before deciding to knock on the door. The guy came out and we had a long chat about Welsh and other things!

Return up another path, past Plas yn Rhiw and a couple of houses, plus notices about bulls and dogs! Still it was a public footpath and no problem. A couple of noisy but friendly dogs with their man. 2 miles including a couple of off-piste sections. 250 feet of down then up, and quite strenuous. Steeper going down than coming up.

PEN LLYN - JUNE 2023 - The ancient fort at Rhiw

Misty this morning, then drizzle. Restlessness beginning to set in around midday.

In the afternoon, around 1545, we set off to walk to the fort on the hill close to Rhiw.

We followed the road to Groeslon , turning right towards Ysgo, but turning left with the road rather than right towards the church. The coastal path goes off to the right along a farm track to Penarfynydd farm. Last year we saw dogs, goats and chickens here. Today just the one chicken was in evidence.

Instead of the coastal path to the right, we took a smaller, less-used path close to the hedge. This joins the coastal path briefly, then heads for the ridge leading to the fort.

The terrain was rough in places, but what fabulous views from the higher ground (about 800 feet; 242 metres).

From the top we tried to reach the coastal path directly, but not a brilliant idea, as there were some steepish craggy drops.

Instead we found a ladder stile and took the path down into Rhiw itself, seeing some more corners of the village. Afterwards we walked down the quiet road.

Another chat with the Welsh lady at the crossroads. (Groeslon means the crossroads.) The walk was close to 4 miles. and about 525 feet of climbing

Wales - near Rhiw - Mynydd Rhiw and coastal path.

Monday 05 July

A much better weather forecast. We set off just after 10. Walked up to radar station, had coffee on a rocky outcrop above it. Then along to Mynydd Rhiw (304m), down to the road and took a path along a lane with a house where the Welshman directed us…don’t take that path, the council haven’t strimmed it, and it’s full of snakes…. we may have ended up there, past the Saints’ Well,in spite of ourselves. The footpath signs were there to start with, but then we made a steep descent to the track, over rough ground, guarded by brambles. From then on it was straightforward along towards Plas, to join the coastal Path on the cliffs towards Llanfaelryhs, and back. Horses running free on the paths. 1080 feet of climbing. 9.8 miles. A brilliant day.
