Wing, Manton and Rutland Garden Centre

 Monday 3rd February 2025. With Kate, Norma and Maureen.

Almost 5 miles.

This walk began from the maze in Wing, then we turned left through the village, past the church,

admiring the snowdrops and splendid aconites along the way. 

We followed the minor road towards Manton 

then turned right along the Rutland Water cycle route beside the road. More aconites to be admired.

The shared cycle/walking path was very quiet this morning - I think we saw one cyclist, though there was traffic noise from the road itself.

After about a mile we reached the new (2023, anyway) cafe - no longer Wellies, but The View. Bigger and more spacious now.

Coffee and cake or scones were consumed before we tackled the final mile and three quarters - this was mostly downhill, along the bridleway, which, as I had suspected was muddy,

though only for a short distance. It reminded me why we have been avoiding the fields this winter!

A wander from Wing

 Wednesday 15th January

Another short wander - the weather was surprisingly mild.

 About 2 miles.

The same route as this, but in reverse.  The first time for almost two weeks that we’ve seen anything above the clouds!

 Friday 11th October 2011

A beautiful day with blue skies and small clouds, in Rutland’s rolling countryside.

From a spot near Glaston, down the hill,

over the railway bridge with view to the tunnel entrance, down hill, over the tributary stream to the Chater, then a long steady walk uphill to Wing.

We pass the maze on our left, and turn left at the junction,

to go past the village hall and the church,

and a field where a few sunflowers are still flowering.

The road bends left and we pass the stall selling “Butt Nuggets”

and cross the railway again.

At the junction we turn left and follow this small road downhill then up again

to where it joins the road we took to Wing earlier. 

Here we turn right and return to our starting point.

Distance, probably around 2 miles.
