Sutton Common - 22nd September 2025

 https://www.walkingbritain.co.uk/walk-2749-description.

Graded as easy, but the first section was hard work.

We parked at the Ryles Arms, on Hollin Lane.

We walked along the road to the footpath.

Very steep to begin with. We spotted a stag on the skyline. One minor deviation from the route, where we misidentified a wall!

We walked for about 4.5 miles. Break for coffee when we reached the high level path, sheltered by a wall and with a view over the Macclesfield area,

and the other way to Shuttlingsloe.

Then onwards and still slightly upwards

- we met one walker coming in the opposite direction and some cows, one posing as a limestone rock.

Then we walked past the tower,

and to the path down before Lingerds Farm. A large group of walkers were coming up the hill.

When we reached the A54 we walked for about 150 metres at the side of the road - it wasn’t busy this morning. A slight orientation problem at one point, but we found our way to Higher Pethills Farm and Lower Pethills with holiday cottages and alpacas .

We found a sheltered spot for lunch. then followed the path back to the road and to the pub, where we had a drink before going home.
