Railway walk to Burtonport and back

Monday 28th April

About 5 miles in all.

We intended to pick up lunch in Burtonport, but the curse of closed on Mondays was in force. 

The railway path finished by going through a construction site just before the village.

We walked back along small roads past the Wheelhouse camping site, all unaware that it had a cafe.

And back to base for refuelling and relaxing.

Pickwell walk, in reverse.

 Tuesday 26th November, with Harry.

In the afternoon we went out to Pickwell again,

Still plenty of colour

Frost on the grass in shady places

and did the walk from November 13th in the other direction, wearing wellies thus time - just as well since the ground was pretty muddy, especially the bridleway at the end. Hard work plodding uphill through sticky mud.  

Fab sunset again. 

2024/07/15 Great Cransley, Thorpe Malsor, Loddington,

 Monday 15th July

With Norma and Maureen. 

We parked at Great Cransley, walked to the reservoir,

and then to Thorpe Malsor Church for a break. 

Along the road to Loddington,

then after the road turning to Cransley , at the end of a row of houses and a hedge, we turned left and followed a footpath, which crossed a field, and dipped down to cross a stream.

We continued in the same direction (southeast) over a bridge crossing another stream, past Mill Farm, eventually reaching a field of wheat, where the path hadn’t been made good, so we strayed slightly, following tractor tracks, then had to follow the edge of the field to find the path in the southeastern corner.

Another field where we followed the line of the fence to our left, through a flock of sheep and a hopeful horse. Then we went through a gate and along a narrow path, back into Great Cransley.

Just over 5 miles in all

2024/07/08 Illston, Carlton Curlieu, Burton Overy

 Monday 08 July

With Norma, Kate and Maureen. The w eather this morning was excellent for walking - but it got a bit hot later.  

We started from Illston on the Hill - and walked to Carlton Curlieu

where we found a welcome bench.

From there we continued to Burton Overy

and back to Illston.

The total route was 5.5 miles.

Norma saw a green woodpecker (I heard its yaffle but didn’t see it)

Circular walk via Colbury church and Deerleap Inclosure to Ashurst

 Thursday 17th August

After lunch I decided to walk along Pound Lane and the path to Colbury Church.

Harry came along, and we decided to walk through Deerleap Inclosure to Ashurst.

Walking app was accidentally stopped there, so not all perfectly recorded!The feeling of walking back in time from new houses and major roads.

From the church we walked to our left along the road for half a mile or so, taking the first cycle track to the right, close to Deerleap Farm.  

A left turn along the main cycle route, through Churchplace Inclosure,

coming out eventually close to Ashurst Station.  

Water mint growing, and various fungi, and then we saw lizards on a fallen log.

Ponies close to Ashurst too.

Then along the road to the Co-op. Ice cream again, before the last mile home.
