Titchmarsh Lake, Thrapston

With Marta, fine and dry. very cold but no wind. Decent underfoot though some mud where the ground had thawed. We did an extra three miles at the start, before I switched the machine on to track the walk. Starting time is accurate.

Total around 7 miles.

Thrapston to Stanwick Lakes

With Maureen and Gordon. Fine, occasional sun, dry - some puddles still frozen. Along railway track - very flat - muddy in places. 11.25 miles in all - I thought it would be nearer 8!

The path was good apart from the sections from Nine Arches Bridge to the railway track, where there was some mud and a few wet patches.

Thrapston

A 2 mile recce to check the condition of the path between the Nine Arches Bridge and the disused railway leading to Stanwick. Or  - any excuse for a short walk on such a beautiful winter day. I was snap-happy today.

The path was a little squelchy in places, with the occasional icy puddle, but passable.

Nine Arches bridge
A bridge was mentioned here in 1310. In 1663 there was a bridge with 24 arches. The bridge was rebuilt in 1795, and repaired in 1841.

Islip church

There was plenty of bird life - goldfinches, sparrows, crows - swans on the lake. So good to see the sky!
