Thursday 21st October 2021, with Harry, approx 11 miles.

Bulwick

Lunch and a large coffee in the sun trap of the Pickled Village
Onward and over the A43 - not a pleasant part of the walk. Then there’s the reedy marsh to cross before reaching the teapot in memory of the Brudenells.

Gretton to Bulwick

Thursday 07 October 2021.  With Maureen, Eddie and Harry. 11 miles, and we didn’t dawdle.

Out via the track and to Kirby Hall,

then the footpath to Deene.

Close to Deene village Hall we took the path past the teapot, erected in memory of the Brudenell parents, then through the overgrown swamp and across the A43.

A welcome stop for an excellent coffee at The Pickled Village in Bulwick,

and back via Harringworth Lodge.

Fine views over the valley

a walk out and back from Bulwick

Tuesday 10th August 2021.  With Marta, 6.5 miles.

I met Marta at Bulwick church at 9.30.
We walked the beginning of a walk towards Apethorpe and Kings Cliffe- mostly ok, but we did go slightly wrong after the shooting hut.

.

I was already getting bored with walking the long paths through fields of corn, and after going wrong we decided to turn back.
When the seagulls follow the tractor…

A bonus was the sight of a hare , possibly old and a little ragged looking which approached us, as we stood silent and motionless, and surely downwind.  It arrived level with us, then suddenly saw us and took off. No photographs, as we were too busy watching.

We continued back to Bulwick, and had a lunch at the Pickled Village cafe, on its very mediterranean feeling terrace.

Gretton to Bulwick and back

Sunday 14th March, with Harry, around 11 miles.

Mother’s Day, chocs and card.

Then, as the weather was looking good we decided to walk over to Bulwick, lots of birds, skylarks, the odd kite, tits in the trees, and lapwings on the way back.

The plants are welcoming spring as well.  We saw sticky buds, catkins, primroses, violets, celandine and coltsfoot, as well as lots of daffodils.

We waited to broach our coffee and cake until we reached Bulwick and found a bench behind the church,  slightly sheltered from the cold wind.

We had a brief chat with the local church warden who told us how they were coping with unusual services and festivals. She was pleased that we noticed all the primroses among the gravestones.

We made our way back along the path beside the pub, through the fields where the cows are now out, and across the A43. Then its the path through the swamp - heading for the teapot monument above Deene House.

We took the road through the village and turned left towards Kirby Hall.

We had lunch at Kirby Hall, then walked back along the Fullen Lane track.

It was quite hard work with the wind and some muddy patches - it was definitely a good move to wear wellies again.

Gretton, Harringworth Lodge, Bulwick and back

Thursday 12 September. Just over 9 miles. With Harry, Maureen and Eddie, on a very fine morning.

We set off from the village hall  and walked along the Jurassic Way to Harringworth Lodge with its lake.

At the end of the lake we turned right and crossed the fields. We know the route pretty well by now. It's the same as this walk last November.
From the bridge on the road over the A43

The Pickled Village has not been restored after the fire several months ago. We had our snack break in the churchyard, where the trees are just beginning to chnge into autumn colours.

By bike to Fineshade from Gretton. Cuckoo!

With Harry. Sunday 09 June 2019.
This has become a familiar local route - from Gretton via Harringworth and Wakerley, pause for a drink, and return via Kings Cliffe, Blatherwycke, Bulwick and Deene. Good weather, not too hot, not windy. A pleasant hiatus day between two spells of rain.
Black swans at Blatherwycke, along with a heron and a family of geese. Just outside the village there are llamas in a field.

We heard a cuckoo, for the second time this year.
Roughly 18 miles.
